To Market, To Market
Here are some tips to make your LETS market table successful.
Book your table
Book well in advance if you are able, by phoning the LETS office & leaving a message or emailing. If you have to pay for the table in advance pay early. If you are interested, apply for the position (paid in GR$) as market co-ordinator. That way, you’ll be able to have a hand in making it work for everyone. Design a poster for the LETS (talk to one of the Board members to approve your design).
Advertise
Invite your friends, your family, and your clients – the market hall format is an excellent chance for those with home businesses to showcase their goods to a broad audience. Remember to tell people that admission is free, and that CA$ are accepted from those who aren’t yet members of LETS. Use your email lists, face book, poster at your church, community groups, or place of business. Posters are available at markets or in the office. Stand on a street corner, and tell passers-by! If you are willing, the LETS can use volunteers to call the membership and remind them about the market—call, leave a message at the office, or email us. Advertise in the newsletter and website board about what you will be offering at the market. Contact the office if you need something added or deleted from your offerings on the website directory.
Organize
Think ahead about the theme of the market if it fits with your business. Think of items you’d like to feature, and possibly have market specials – i.e. special pricing, percentage GR$, or product combos (remember, you must accept a minimum of 20% GR). Price labeling is important. The day before the market, make sure you have the supplies you need: change, pens, paper, calculator, table cloth, bags for sale items, and make sure your items are priced—either individually or by group.
Get it on paper
Get business cards printed (or pay your kids to make them for you!), and if applicable, a flyer or catalog (check your Green Pages for LETS members offering those services or the Website directory of offerings.). Sometimes sales don’t happen on the day of the market – giving out a card to an interested party may lead to excellent after-sales (even to people outside of LETS). Have a sign-up sheet at the market to create a mailing/e-mailing list of people interested in your products or services.
Dress it up
Try to make your display eye-catching. Bring a sheet, table cloth, or bolt of fabric to cover up the table. First impressions can be important in establishing a sense of professionalism. (and the cloth will protect you from splinters!).
Set up & Clean up
Since LETS is volunteer run, make sure you arrive in time to set up your own table. At the end of the market, please stay around to help put tables and chairs away, assist others to carry out their stuff, and tidy the hall and kitchen. Many hands make light work, and light hearts.
Follow up
After the market, contact people from your list (see point 4). Also, if you have constructive ideas on how the market went, call them into the office, email or write a small article for the newsletter.
Would you like to donate something from your business - gift certificate or goods - to have as a door prize at the next market? If you do, let me know. Remember to have your business card or a label on it. This is free advertising for you! Lori Sainte
